I have observed similar in Team Fortress Classic, way before the client-side prediction was added. Players who were able to master the sniper on dialup wound up being incredibly hard to deal with at LAN parties. They were really good at dragging that server-side red dot across the players. Forcing players to endure substantial amounts of latency seems to create a certain degree of prescience.
